Gravy Fries

One night I told my husband I saw Poutine being made on Food Network and I was going to add gravy and cheese to his beloved fries. His inital response was dissapointment and a total lack of enthusiasm.

His final response was love and praises and "when can we have these again?". He should never have doubted me and I remind him of that every time he asks for gravy fries.

We've had versions out a couple of times but always prefer these homemade versions.

FYI we have to call them gravy fries in our house because you don't want to know how he pronounces Poutine. Inappropiate to say the least. :-/  And also these are a much less sophistocated version of Poutine.

Ingredients:

1 bag Ore Ida Simply Country Style Fries

2 cans beef broth

3-4 tbsp flour

3 tbsp butter

1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

1 tsp worcestershire sauce

Pepper to taste

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Bake fries according to package instructions. I always bake mine for a little extra time so they're a little more crispy.

In a medium size skillet melt the butter over low-medium heat and mix in 3 tbsps of flour. Stir until a paste forms.

Turn heat up to medium high. Add in the beef broth in small increments, whisking the entire time until all of the flour is dissolved and no lumps remain. Add remaining broth, seasoning, and worcestershire. Simmer, whisking frequently, until gravy starts to thicken.

If it looks like the gravy is not going to thicken after simmering for 10-15 minutes then remove part of your gravy mixture to a separate bowl. Add 1 tbsp of flour and whisk until no lumps remain. Return mixture to pan and continue simmering and stirring until the gravy thickens.

When the fries have baked top them with cheese and return them to the oven. Turn the broiler on high and broil until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove from broiler just as the cheese starts to brown or the fry ends start to darken.

(For this step I usually portion the fries out onto oven safe plates, top with cheese, and broil but you can leave them on the pan as well.)

Plate the cheesy fries and top with gravy. Voila you now have delicious gravy fries.
