Sausage Dogs

A little step up from your average hot dog.

What you'll need:

10 poppy seed hot dog buns

10 sausage dogs (My husband likes the Johnsonville Jalapeno and Cheese Smoked Sausage, I chose Italian style chicken sausage dogs for myself)

1/2 large onion, sliced

1 red or yellow bell pepper, julienned

2-3 tbsp jalapenos, sliced

1 tsp garlic, minced

1/4 cup water

1 cup chicken broth

1 tsp worcestershire sauce

Your favorite toppings: mustard, chili, cheese

I've only ever found poppy seed hotdog buns at Publix once. Seeing as there isn't a Publix located near me I decided to try making my own. It was surprisingly easy and it really souped up the recipe having such fresh buns. I used this recipe--->

While my buns were baking I cooked the dogs.

Heat a dutch oven to medium heat. Add the sausage dogs and brown them on each side. Remove and set aside.

Add water and let simmer to remove any bits from the bottom of the pot. About half of the water will evaporate.

Add peppers and onions and cook until slightly tender. Add jalapenos, garlic, worcestershire, and chicken broth. Stir.

Return the dogs to pot, nestling them into the mixture. Cover, reduce heat to simmer, cook for 20 more min.

Top your sausage dogs to your heart's desire. I topped mine with the sauteed onions and peppers and a little parmesan cheese. The hubs topped his with chili, sauteed onions, and mustard.
